If your smart device is connected to a dedicated access point (wireless router)
If there is another access point (wireless router) for connecting to the computer, connect the smart device to that access point. If there are no other access points (wireless routers) other than the access point for connecting to the smart device, connect the printer to that access point.
Select "Connect through an Access Point (Recommended)" when the printer is not connected to the network. Select "Connect to a printer that is connected to the network" when the printer is already connected to the network.

If you want to connect the smart device to the printer but do not want to connect it to the same network as the printer
Connect the smart device to the printer directly (Wi-Fi Direct). The printer is then available on a Wi-Fi connection and a direct connection (Wi-Fi Direct).

If you are using tethering (internet sharing) on the mobile device
You cannot connect to the printer from the smart device when you are using tethering on the smart device. Disable tethering, and then connect to the printer.
Select "Connect through an Access Point (Recommended)" when the printer is not connected to the network. Select "Connect to a printer that is connected to the network" when the printer is already connected to the network.
