Just in time for summer, here's a refreshing folding fan. Simply open up the fan to make your flower bloom! Try making them with the kids using your favorite designs.

You will need...

  • Design paper (Regular A4 size paper) 2 sheets
  • Cardstock (cut to 2cm X 18cm) 2 pieces
  • Rubber band 1

  • Scissors or any other cutting instrument
  • Double-sided tape
  • cellotape

Before you start

  • Make sure you have your design paper ready in advance.
  • Don't forget, you can print design paper using the smartphone app "Epson Creative Print". If your model comes with a design paper option built in, you can print it straight from the printer.

How to

1 Making the stem
  1. Cut the 2 sheets of A4 design paper into thirds to make a total of 6 pieces.
Of these, 2 pieces will be used to make the stem, so the other 4 pieces are for making the flower petals.
  1. Attach double-sided tape to both edges of the cut design paper (area in red), and attach the cardstock leaving a margin of space at the bottom.
  2. Fold the design paper over the cardstock, and glue or tape it down. This will become the stem of the sunflower folding fan.
  1. Tie a knot in the center of the rubber band, and cut it in half to form a small loop.
  1. Place the rubber band loop around the bottom of the stem, and attach double-sided tape to the end (area in red). Once you fold the end over to cover the rubber band and attach it, your stem is complete.
Using a different pattern, make another stem in the same way. This next stem will simply have the end folded over without a rubber band.
2 Making the flower petals
In this section, red tape has been used to make it easy to see.
  1. Using a piece of the design paper that was cut into thirds at the beginning, fold the paper in half , then in half once again, and then in thirds. There should be 11 folds in the paper when you open it up.
Place the pattern side up, and make the folds shown with solid lines into mountain folds, and the folds shown with dotted lines into valley folds.
  2. Flip the paper over, and tape the three mountain folds in the middle together with scotch tape.
6 Red tape has been used to make it easy to see.
  1. Tape the next mountain folds on each side together in the same way.
  2. Finally, tape the outside edges together.
  3. This will make 1 section of the flower petals. Perform the same steps with the other pieces of paper to make a total of 4 sections.
3 Cutting the edges of the flower petals, and arranging the sections together
  1. As shown in the picture, cut the edges of the flower petals in an arc using scissors.
  2. Attach double-sided tape to the side surface (area in red).
8 Red tape has been used to make it easy to see.
  1. Attach the edges of two of the sections together, and then reinforce the ends with scotch tape. Do the same with the other sections to create two pieces.
  2. Finally, attach the two pieces together and reinforce the center with scotch tape.
4 Putting the stem and flower petals together
  1. Attach double-sided tape to the surface of both of the far ends (area in red), and attach one of the stems to each of them.
  1. When the flower is folded up or wide open, you can use the stopper to hold it in place. Pull the rubber band attached to the end of one of the stems over the other end.
